My needs 2.

Ernest Hemingway: Hills Like White Elephants
(in my view)

The story is about a girl and a man, who are in the railway-station, and they drink beer, until the train. They are talking very foggy about a simple operation, which will make their lives better and bright again. The girl isn't too happy and the man always say: 'I don't want you to do anything that you don't want to do'. But as I said it is very foggy.

If I think about it, I will see, that between the girl and man there is love. But they don't have any kind of body contact between them. However they have a problem. What kind of problem? A simple operation makes everything fine again.... The girl is pregnant, isn't she? But if my girlfriend (just in mind) would be gravid, I'd like to aid her with my love and help her in the decision. There isn't any kind of word, that what can be, if the girl doesn't have the operation. The only opportunity is to make the operation?
On the other hand the man doesn't speak about marriage. If I (just in mind) has a baby, with a girl, who I'm in love with (?), I'd like to marry her. Maybe the man has wife or family?
Are they in love with each other? As I said there is no body-contact or nice words, as it is usually in love.

Hemingway's short story is another very thoughtprovoking writing, that's why I like it very much.
I hope it is interesting for you, too.

My needs 1.

Roald Dahl: The landlady

(as I see it)

I’m going to write about one of my favourite short stories.

Firstly, I’d like to tell you the short summarize of the plot. The short story is about a 17-year-old boy, Billy Weaver, who arrives in Bath at night in winter, and he wants a motel, where he can sleep. During he is going to the motel he see a Bed and Breakfast house. He decides to sleep there, because of the cold. He rings and immediately a kind, little, old lady opens the door. He gets a room, which is very cheap and the landlady tells him, to write his name into the guestbook. There is only two names in the guestbook and both of them are familiar to the boy, but he can’t remember them really. And both of them are over two years old. The landlady gives him tea and during that the boy just thinking about the names and than the lady say, that these men are still being here. The boy is surprised, because there wasn’t any kind of noise from upstairs. Than he see a parrot in the cage, he comes closer, he thought was alive but just realized is stuffed. The landlady reveals that she herself stuffed the bird. Billy realizes with a shock that the other pet in the room, a little dachsund by the fire isn't alive. He also notices a curious bitter almond taste in his tea, and he asks the landlady again: "Haven't there been any other guests here except them in the last two or three years?" She gives him a little smile as she replies, "No, my dear. Only you."

Everything what is important is between the lines. The nice, kind, little old lady is a preparetor, whose hobby is to stuff animals and… young, handsome boys. The tea is of course poisoned, and Billy will be the next victim of the landlady.

But why don’t I feel the short story horroristic or disgusting? I have totally different feelings in connection with it. It is very thoughtprovoking and I know I will never forget it. It has a very individual, own style, which doesn’t put you in horroristic mood.

But what makes this style? I can’t really answer for it. Very interesting question, however to tell you the truth I’m not really interested in, until I can read so many short stories like this.
